Invisalign came out probably about 15 years ago at this point. It actually was invented by nonorthodontists. It was just an interesting idea. For years we've been able to ... If a patient came in and had one tooth that was out of alignment, we would take an impression, make a little model, cut the tooth out that was offensive, moved it in the right place, and we made it a blister type pack of a liner to go in and put in. If the patient would keep wearing it, the tooth would eventually move but we weren't able to do big groups of teeth. That's where these guys came in. They said, “Gee, if we can come up with a computer program that could do that, we can go and move groups of teeth down and around and all over the place and hip hip hooray for us.” That's where they came up with Invisalign.
What Invisalign does is you use an aligner for 2 weeks and then you take it out and you put the next one in. You do that in sequence. It depends on how bad your teeth relationships are as to how many you're going to ultimately wear. The nice thing about them though is you can take them out socially. You can't eat with them. We ask our patients if they're going to have a coca-cola or a tea, take them out, rinse their mouth out, put them back on. There are some patients that have had some problems with wearing them and having candy and things like that, not taking care of them but they're few and far between. The orthodontists like them. The periodontists really like it because it moves the teeth very little each time so there's not a lot of stress on the gum tissue and so forth. They're happy with that. It seems to work out a lot better with adults because they're not self-conscious about having their braces on and so forth.
From an orthodontic point of view it's nice because all we have to do is stock them. If I've done the correct job on the diagnosis and the treatment plan I get the original, kabango, all we have to do is keep adding on aligners and away we go. It's been really nice. They came up with a new product this year. They used to have what they call refinement. At the end if you didn't look like the computer looked like, you could send it in for 3 refinements. If you still didn't look good at that point, then you had to start paying again. Now they said, “You know what? From day 1 that you start, you've got 5 years. You can have as many as you need and we're going to go and keep supplying them until you're done.” You've got 5 years to get this product done. If you haven't done it by then, I don't know what else is going to happen.

What is Invisalign and how does it work?
Invisalign is made up of a series of clear plastic aligners that work together to shift your teeth into place over time. The aligners are created from impressions and images taken by Dr. Eckelson. He will relay to Invisalign exactly where each and every tooth should be when treatment is complete. We aim to improve your overall bite and give you the comfortable, beautiful smile you have wanted.
When your custom aligners are created, they take into account each stage of the alignment process. The first aligner will fit very closely to your current smile, putting pressure in just the right places to move your teeth ever so slightly in the right direction. The aligners are designed to be changed out every two weeks, allowing each aligner to do its job before moving on to the next. You final aligner will move your teeth into their final position.
Invisalign aligners are designed to be worn for at least 22 hours each day. While they are removable for eating, cleaning, and for special occasions, please note that they will be less effective or possibly work more slowly if they are not worn for the specified amount of time each day.
After treatment is complete, like with most other orthodontic treatments, it will be necessary to wear a retainer. A retainer will help make sure your teeth stay properly aligned after treatment. Please follow all instructions given to you by Dr. Eckelson to achieve and retain maximum results.
What are the benefits of Invisalign over traditional braces?
Invisalign is great for patients who want convenient, comfortable, and invisible alignment therapy. Let’s talk about each of these benefits:
Convenient. As mentioned above, Invisalign clear aligners are removable to make eating, cleaning, and special occasions more manageable. They will never be in your way! Traditional braces are bonded to your teeth and are removable only by Dr. Eckelson at the end of your treatment. Having aligners that you can remove is a convenience offered only by Invisalign. But beware – leaving them out of your mouth for too long can decrease the effectiveness of the treatment.
Comfortable. Invisalign aligners are made of a smooth, clear plastic material that fits comfortably in your mouth. Traditional braces come with brackets and wires that may irritate, scratch, or poke your cheeks and gums. With Invisalign, you will never have to worry about that. Invisalign aligners also work more gently than traditional braces while offering similar treatment times (the average length of treatment for adults is 18 months). When you change out your aligners, you will only feel pressure – no painful tightening appointments.
Invisible. Did we mention that Invisalign clear aligners are nearly invisible to the naked eye? Because they are made up of a clear plastic material, there are no unsightly metal brackets or wire to contend with. Chances are, nobody will even know you are undergoing orthodontic treatment – unless you tell them, of course!
