Over the years everybody has been excited about not having metal braces in their mouth. When I was a kid they actually had a band that went around each tooth. It was really uncomfortable to get it on. When you finished cases off that way, you had to take out certain bands and close it together, and take out certain bands and close it together. Back in the 70's we finally got to the point of gluing things right onto the teeth. That was nice. Shortly there after some fellas came up with a ceramic type of a bracket that had multiple shades that you could choose. You were a gray or a brown or a tan or a pink or whatever.
They were really bulky because they just made them completely out of ceramic material. They found that they fractured a lot and it really wasn't a great product. Then they came up with metal lined ceramic brackets so that you had a metal slot in there so the metal worked on it a little bit better. Finally, I guess probably in the 80's, they came up with ceramics that were clear that you could see through so it would adapt the color of the individual's teeth. That's pretty much where we're at today. There's a bunch of different kinds of crystals that are out there and most of them are about the same. They work just the same as the metal brackets that we have.

Our Options for Discreet Braces
Our plethora of aesthetically pleasing options allows you to choose which option is best for you. Together with Dr. Eckelson, you can determine which option will work best for your specific situation. Whether you need complete invisibility or a strong but less noticeable alternative, we can help you get the treatment you need.
Ceramic brackets are very popular among patients who want the reliability of traditional braces without the distracting appearance of a mouthful of metal. Our ceramic braces use a special type of clear bracket that offers you a higher level of aesthetic appeal as compared to traditional braces. We can even use clear ligatures (the tiny elastic bands) to hold the wire in.
However, ceramic braces are not our most invisible option. They do still require the use of a metal archwire. Despite the wire, these braces offer a less noticeable form of treatment that is great for all types of patients.
Our office also offers lingual braces for certain cases. Lingual braces use self-ligating braces that are placed on the backside of the teeth for optimal appearance. The self-ligating braces do not require the use of ligatures and are easier to use than traditional brackets in this manner. These brackets also offer the potential of faster treatment times because of their ability to self-tighten and to cause less friction.
Because of the way lingual braces are placed (behind the teeth), they are completely invisible when you smile. These braces are our most aesthetically appealing option. However, they are not for everyone. To determine if lingual braces are right for you, please consult with Dr. Eckelson.
Invisalign is made up of a series of clear plastic aligner trays that are changed out every couple weeks to create a gentle, gradual shift of the teeth. Because of the material they are made of, these aligners are nearly invisible to the naked eye and comfortable to wear. No unsightly or uncomfortable metal brackets here!
Invisalign aligners are also removable for convenient eating and cleaning, but beware – the aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours a day to be effective.
