Today to become an orthodontist you have to go to undergraduate school, you have to go to dental school, and you have to go to orthodontic training. Orthodontic training is usually two to three years of concentrated effort there. Over the years no matter who you are you have to have continuing education courses and in our state you have to have thirty every two years. It's like peanuts. I regularly get a hundred and some odd every year but it's keeping up with what's going on. Different people belong to different organizations. I belong to all the dental organizations and all the orthodontic organizations that mirror them. Along the way too, different accolades go out to different people. I've been accepted to be a fellow of the International College of Dentists, which you have to be elected by fellow dentists to get into. It's been an interesting ride.

Dr. Robert A. Eckelson graduated from The Ohio State University in 1971 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Dr. Eckelson then attended the University of Illinois Orthodontic program and was certificated in orthodontics in 1973. He then moved to Boca Raton, FL, where he has been in practice for more than 40 years.

Soon after arriving in Florida, Dr. Eckelson became a certified diver and is also a certified flight instructor. Amateur radio has been a hobby of his since 8th grade. He flies for Angel Flight and also flies to most of the seminars and conventions he and his staff attend around the country during the year. Dr. Eckelson far exceeds the minimum continuing education requirements every year and participates in some beta testing of products for various orthodontic suppliers.

Dr. Eckelson has been President of the South Palm Beach County Dental Association and is currently a Delegate to the Florida Dental Association and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
