Orthodontics Can Give You A Reason To Smile | Boca Raton, FL
- December 17, 2015
During the holiday season, we often gives gifts to people we care about.
This can be as elaborate as jewelry for someone we love or a smaller gift exchange, like the “Secret Santa” that many workplaces do between employees.
You deserve to give yourself a gift, too. Maybe you’ll get a new sweater or go out to dinner, which is fine, but why not give yourself something that can make a huge difference on your life instead?
If you’ve been living with teeth that are crooked, crowded, or misaligned in some other way, orthodontic treatment can improve your oral health and your confidence.
Robert A. Eckelson, D.D.S., P.A. in Boca Raton provides a range or orthodontic services that can improve your smile.
We’ll start with the most obvious benefits of orthodontics: Your teeth will look better, and so will you.
During a recent Kelton survey, respondents were asked their thoughts on teeth and smiles. Here’s a quick overview of what they found:
– People with straight teeth were thought to be 58 percent more likely to be successful and wealthy.
– 29 percent of Americans said the first thing they notice about someone is his or her teeth, and 24 percent said that it what they most remember after meeting someone new.
– People with straight teeth were seen as having a 57 percent better chance of a second date than people with crooked teeth.
– The respondents also associated straight teeth with other positive qualities. People with straight teeth were seen as 21 percent more likely to be happier, 38 percent more likely to be smart, and 47 percent more likely to be healthy.
– And 73 percent of respondents reported that they are more likely to trust someone with a nice smile.
It may be hard to believe just how much of a difference our teeth can affect how we are perceived by others. Fair or not, people may not be giving you the benefit of the doubt if they don’t like something about your teeth.
When people discuss orthodontic treatment, they often discuss wanting to improve the appearance of their teeth. They may be overlooking another important reason to straighten their teeth — their health.
When your teeth are crooked, crowded together, or have gaps between them, you may be at higher risk of oral health problems. It can be more difficult to clean between teeth that overlap one another, and gaps can expose your gums to infections.
If you can’t effectively brush and floss your teeth from all sides, bacteria and plaque can build and may form tartar. That can increase your risk of tooth decay and periodontal disease.
If you have a crossbite or other teeth alignment issues, you may be putting added wear on your teeth. They may erode the protective enamel. When that happens, you have another factor that increases your risk of tooth decay.
In some cases, orthodontics can help with pain as well. Sometimes misalignment issues can put added strain on the muscles in your face and jaw. If these aren’t corrected it could lead to bigger problems and more pain down the road.
At our dentist office in Boca Raton, we offer a variety of orthodontic options for our patients.
Braces remain a standard part of orthodontic treatment, but improvements in modern dentistry mean you have more options than ever.
Traditional metal braces use brackets, wires, and ligatures to push and pull your teeth into a new position. Some newer braces are “self-litigating,” which makes them less bulky than other types of orthodontics.
Clear braces are another innovation in orthodontic treatment. These brackets are made of ceramics or hard plastic that more closely match the color of your teeth.
And Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that has done away with wires and brackets altogether. With Invisalign, you can receive the benefits of orthodontics with fewer complications.
If you don’t like your teeth, it shows in other ways. You may be less likely to smile. Your teeth can affect your self-confidence, which may prevent you from applying for a job, seeking a promotion, asking someone out, or accepting a date.
Good teeth can improve your self-esteem by improving your smile. When you have a good smile, you are more likely to share it, and we all know that smiles are contagious in a good way.
