Keep Calm And Call Dr. Eckelson
- March 28, 2016
You never saw the ball coming.
You were watching a basketball game with your friends. You turned to ask a question, when – WHAM!
The basketball hit you in the jaw. It was a little embarrassing at first. That changed when your friend pointed out that you were bleeding.
One of the brackets on your braces popped off your tooth. The wire was broken and bent, and part of the wire was poking into your cheek.
This is now an orthodontic emergency.
But, you don’t need to worry. You know exactly which orthodontist to call in Boca Raton, Robert A. Eckelson, D.D.S., P.A.
When An Emergency Happens
No one expects an emergency. After all, we would take steps to prevent it from happening if we knew it was coming.
The scenario described above is just one of many possible emergency situations. Hopefully, you’ll never have to go through any of them.
But, if an emergency does happen to you or someone you know, then you need to call 561-235-3100 as soon as possible.
If you are calling outside our regular office hours, then listen to the message on the answering machine and write down the emergency contact number. You can call or text that number. (Sending a text is often the fastest way to get help.)
In addition to running his office, our own Dr. Eckelson is on the staff at two hospitals.
He has treated patients who were victims of crime, patients who were involved in automotive accidents, and patients who have been injured in any number of ways.
He understands that your emergency can seem terrifying at the moment. He also knows that he can and will do everything he can to help.
Dealing With The Immediate Problem
You may want to do a few things before you start racing to the dentist’s office or the hospital.
Let’s use our scenario above as an example. In that situation, you have a loose bracket and a wire poking into your cheek.
Get a cotton swab or a pencil with an eraser. Use the swab or the eraser to push the wire flat against your teeth. You may need someone to help you do this.
You also may need to rinse your mouth with water to remove any blood.
Get some wax to place on the ends of the broken wire. This will make the wire more comfortable and reduce the risk that it will poke you again.
To deal with the loose bracket, you may need a pair of sterile tweezers and a family member or friend to help you. If possible, try to gently slide the bracket back to its original position against your tooth.
If this isn’t possible, move the bracket into a secure position. If the bracket has fallen off, bring it with you when you meet with us.
Please be aware that you don’t have to get hit in the face with a basketball for your bracket to come loose. Trying to bite or chew hard or crunchy foods can cause a bracket to break free, too.
Retainers are another commonly used orthodontic device. You may have a retainer as part of your primary treatment, or you may wear a retainer temporarily after your braces are removed.
You should call our office as soon as you can if your retainer breaks.
Try to collect all the pieces of the retainer. You should bring them with you when you meet with us.
Dealing With Severe Pain
Everyone understands that you may feel some pressure on your teeth during your orthodontic treatment.
However, this should not leave you in severe pain. If this happens, contact us to let us know. This is a problem that we want to fix as soon as possible.
