A Clear Way To Improve Your Teen’s Smile
- May 9, 2016
Teenagers have different needs than adults. This is true on a personal level. It can be true in orthodontic care as well.
These treatments are intended to do the same thing — straighten teeth — no matter who is being helped. Yet, it’s nice to know that people take the needs of teens into consideration when designing a product.
Invisalign Teen does exactly that.
Where can you learn more about Invisalign Teen? If you live in Boca Raton, you can visit the office of Dr. Robert A. Eckelson.
He’s more than a dentist. He’s an orthodontic specialist. He can help you decide if Invisalign Teen is right for your son or daughter, and he can guide you through the process.
How Invisalign Teen Came To Be
Invisalign was created as an alternative to braces. Initially, dental professionals focused on using this technology for adults. The aligners are removable, and one of the concerns was that teenagers would not wear for the recommended 22 hours per day.
In most cases, that concern proved to be unfounded. Teens often are more reliable when it comes to wearing than aligners than adult patients, according to Invisalign’s own research.
Another worry was that teens would lose the aligners, which could interrupt their treatment. To address this, Invisalign Teen includes six free aligner replacements.
As it has turned out, it’s rare for teens to lose their aligners, and few patients ever need to get all six of their replacement aligners.
We want to say up front that Invisalign Teen may not work for every patient. However, this is a great option if your son or daughter is eligible to use it.
We know that many teenagers are active in sports or in other extracurricular activities, like marching band or contact sports. Invisalign Teen may be a better option than braces because of this.
You run the risk getting struck in the face with a ball or the occasional elbow, depending on the sport. This kind of contact could cause brackets to come loose or wires to break. That’s less of a worry for someone using a smooth, plastic aligner.
Braces may interfere with your son or daughter’s ability to play certain musical instruments. Invisalign may make it easier to complete his or her orthodontic treatment and continue mastering his or her instrument of choice.
Invisalign and Invisalign Teen offer some benefits that just aren’t possible with most braces.
One of the “clear” advantages is that Invisalign products are transparent. Teens who are already self-conscious about their smiles may feel uncomfortable walking around with brackets and wires attached to their teeth.
Invisalign’s aligners are designed to be as discreet as possible. Each aligner is practically invisible when it is placed over your teenager’s teeth.
Another advantage is convenience. We have already mentioned that the aligners should be worn for 22 hours per day. That leaves two hours when your teen can remove the aligners.
What can he or she do during those two hours? First and foremost, he or she can eat. (We understand this is something many teenagers like to do.) More specifically, your teen can eat whatever he or she likes. That’s not always possible with braces.
It’s also important for your teen to maintain his or her oral hygiene. By removing the aligners, teenagers can brush and floss like they normally do. They just need to remember to clean their aligner, too.
Comfort is another factor to consider. We strive to make orthodontic care as comfortable as possible, but smooth plastic aligners are about as comfortable as it can get. With Invisalign Teen, you won’t have to worry about a wire breaking or poking your son or daughter in the cheeks, lips, or tongue.
One of the other differences between Invisalign and Invisalign Teen are the blue dots.
Each Invisalign Teen aligner has blue dots. These help in two ways.
First, they prove whether your teen has been wearing the aligners like he or she should. Second, they let your teen know when it’s time to switch to the next aligner.
It’s a simple but effective way to keep your teenager on track with his or her treatment.
